Excluding your visits

Excluding your visits

Your own clicks make small sites look busier than they are. Tell Pulse once, per browser, and it stops sending data from that browser.

Exclude a browser#

Open your own site in the browser you want to ignore, open the console (right-click, Inspect, Console), and run:

js
pulse.ignore(true)

It sets pulse_ignore = '1' in that browser's local storage, and the script stops sending events from then on, including the current page. The same command in plain form is also shown under Settings, Tracking:

js
localStorage.pulse_ignore = '1'

To count that browser again:

js
pulse.ignore(false)

That removes the flag. The page you are on keeps ignoring you until you reload it.

Open any page of your site with ?pulse_ignore=1 on the end (for example https://example.com/?pulse_ignore=1) and that browser stops being tracked, from that very page. Open any page with ?pulse_ignore=0 to count the browser again. It sets the same local-storage flag as the console command. Bookmark the link on each device you use, including phones.

Exclude a phone or a tablet#

The link above is the easiest way on a phone, since mobile browsers have no console. If you prefer, publish a page on your own site that sets the flag, and open it once on each device:

html
<!-- e.g. https://example.com/ignore-me -->
<script>
  localStorage.pulse_ignore = '1';
  document.body.textContent = 'Pulse will ignore this browser.';
</script>

What is skipped automatically#

  • Pages on localhost, 127.0.0.1, [::1] and file: URLs, unless the script has data-allow-localhost.
  • Automated browsers: the script does not run when navigator.webdriver is true.
  • Known bots, crawlers, link-preview fetchers, uptime monitors and HTTP libraries (by User-Agent; real phone and browser names are not matched), plus any request with no User-Agent. The server answers these with 202 and stores nothing.

Common issues#

I still see my visits
The flag lives in one browser, on one origin. Run it again in each browser and profile you use, and on each subdomain you visit (www.example.com and example.com are separate origins). Clearing site data removes the flag.
Can I exclude an IP address?
Not today. Pulse does not store IP addresses, so there is no IP filter. Use the browser flag.
I excluded myself by accident
Run pulse.ignore(false), or delete pulse_ignore under Application, Local Storage in your browser's dev tools.
Testing the install on localhost
Add data-allow-localhost to the script tag while you test, and remove it before you ship. See troubleshooting.
